The Paddle Against Poverty took place on January 12 and raised over $10000 with 26 paddlers - great effort! /photos of the event/
Weather conditions were favorable and the paddle was completed in about 2 hours and 15 minutes. No blue bottles this time, and we managed to avoid the sharks :) (according to life savers that were with us).
Big thanks to the surf life savers from Collaroy, Long Reef and North Steyne for helping us with the event safety. You guys rock!
Thanks to all the surf shops and surf clubs for putting up the posters to promote this event, to Manly Daily for the article and Sydney Morning Herald for the blurb, and to all the websites that promoted this event:
coastalwatch.com realsurf.com
and others
We are aiming to run this event again next year, so if you would like to join us keep it in mind!

IT'S NOT ABOUT ME...
On Saturday 12th Jan 2008, the inaugural Paddle Against Poverty will hit the water. The course ahead of the paddlers will be 10km from Collaroy to Manly (more details). Every steely-eyed entrant will aim to raise at least $100 to help families on the Sumompo Rubbish Dump in Manado, Indonesia to release themselves from poverty.

Maybe you're a surfer / clubbie / everyday-legend (must be 14 years or older on 12/1/08) who reckons you've got what it takes to brave the ocean swells on a board? Or maybe the idea freaks you out, but you'd be happy to sponsor someone who's valiant enough to give it a go? Either way, you just caught yourself and said "hang on, it's not about me!"
Sydney's Northern Beaches is one of the most beautiful stretches of urban-beachscapes in the world. It's also one of the best resourced. We've got freedoms and material blessings here that most people in the world couldn't even dream about. We don't feel guilty about that, but nor do we just give-in to apathy and inaction either – right?
Not on Saturday 12th Jan 2008 we don't!
Over the past 30 years Christian Surfers have built a reputation for staging awesome events. Events that are serious fun, but ones that also remind us about Jesus' challenge to 'love one another'. That make us say 'yeah, it's not about me'. Christian Surfers have now teamed up with North Steyne SLSC and the
tried-and-trusted crew at Manly-Manado to help release families from
poverty. We'd be stoked for you to join us in the water.
SO shout it out, who's it about?!
